The cover was carried by helicopter to the mainland. Sadly, I didn’t see a single puffin, as my visit was long before they arrive in the spring to breed on the cliffy coastline. In a place of wide spaces and big skies, without roads, cars or pollution, simply walking is a profound pleasure. Since Lundy was declared rat free the seabird populations have been steadily rising. Before the study, there were 13 puffins on Lundy, down from 3,500 pairs in 1939 - there are now 375.
